About Us

We're Different

Serving in the Lutheran tradition of social ministry

Different is engrained in our culture and has been from when our founders’ goodwill conceptualized a care setting to meet a rural community’s needs for senior housing and forged their vision into becoming one of the first nursing homes in Carroll County, MD.

That nursing home, Carroll Lutheran Village, continues to thrive, though differently from its humble beginnings. Over the last 40 years, the nursing home has expanded to a life plan community with more than 600 residents, a continuum of care, a variety of apartments and homes, services and amenities. In the past 10 years, it continued to evolve adding a sister community, Lutheran Village at Miller’s Grant, and creating a corporate entity, Lutheran Social Ministries of Maryland.

Our differences have led to award winning recognition, nationally and locally as well as within the senior living industry. See why we are the best; experience the difference for yourself.

An important difference is our deep-rooted interest in bringing people together. LSMMD and its communities are set in the Lutheran faith, but are welcoming to all – regardless of faith, background and identity. Diversity makes relationships richer.

Our size fosters tight-knit connections. It affords residents and team members to remain connected. Our ongoing presence and deep connections in our communities provide greater communication, problem solving and relationship development.

We also inspire those around us to become different – more of who they want to be.

New residents within our communities soon develop a network of close friends from events, activities and clubs that bring them and other residents together. Our award-winning Flourish™ wellness program and lifelong learning opportunities, with local colleges and senior centers, offer opportunities to explore hobbies and interests that may not have been possible prior to living in our communities.

We also nurture career growth, providing team members with on-site training, conference opportunities and tuition assistance as well as options to grow within our communities and hands-on education for soon to be working professionals who are attending local colleges.

Another difference is our giving philosophy. Our communities are not just a community within a larger community; they are part of the larger community. As a non-profit organization, we understand how support increases the ability to provide services to people who need help and communities to prosper. We align ourselves with other non-profit organizations for LSMMD and its communities, residents and team members to support the wider community, where they live, whether that be financially or by volunteering.
